Siba Mtongana: Strength, Charisma, Grace.

If you have been following my blog since its inception you know very well just how much I look up to Siba. I always talk about her and admire how effortless she is with her craft. I first met her on Thursday the 12th during “This is Africa Launch” and had the honor of once again getting a once in a lifetime chance of getting a one on one interview with her the following Saturday. I was sooooo nervous. I was just praying not to stumble over my words or make a fool of myself in the presence of my role model LOL. After arriving embarrassingly a little bit late I found a warm, calm crowd cracking in laughter while keenly listening to Brian speak as she looked on and chipped in.  After the meet and greet, we took our selfies and got to chat with the power couple. “You are doing a fantastic job! I love your work & I love your site!” Siba told me. My soul literally left my body! Hearing that from someone I look up to is among the most validating things I have heard since I started this journey. We spoke about so many things. She has this warm demeanor that makes anyone feel at ease. She is very humble despite her constant rise and rise. Born and raised in Africa, and still living in Africa, she is very proud of being part of this continent’s story and is a strong believer that we can rewrite our narrative and that in whichever field we are in we can be just as good as, if not better than, people born in other parts of the globe.

Here is how our one on one interview went down:

Smashed Potatoes with Cheddar Cheese Sauce

I always felt it in my gut that 2016 would be a kick-ass year. And it really had kicked off in a kick ass way! I have had the privilege of being featured as the blogger of the month by DSTV kenya. Do spare 3 minutes to watch this video and hope you like it. If that’s not enough, I decided to throw in an awesome recipe you can try too today :))

If you have been reading my blog for a long time now, you know that one of my ultimate culinary role models has always been Siba. I loved her show from the very first time I watched it. And then I watched reruns over and over till I now know all the words. Yes, that how much I love Siba’s table. This recipe was inspired by  this recipe which run in one of the episodes during Season 1 of Siba’s Table. It may not look as pretty as her’s but I can guarantee that my smashed potatoes with cheddar cheese sauce tastes just as great. Easy. Speedy. Delicious.

Broccoli and Garlic Penne Stir Fry

I get inspiration for my dishes from an aray of sources. One of them being the cooking shows on food network. My current favorites are Pioneer Woman, Siba’s Table, Trisha’s Southern Kitchen, Food Network Star, Chopped and Grandma’s Cookbook. Do you guys watch these too?? This dish was however inspired by Buddy Valastro of  Kitchen Boss. I like his recipes because they do not take too  long, neither are they too complicated which makes them relatable to me and million others. He likes Italian flavors, as his roots are Italian and incorporates them so well in his cooking.

His recipe used mushroms and macaroni. But I decided to use broccoli and penne pasta. It was outstandingly good. You know those meals you eat so fast because they are so good? This is one of them!
